This was the first Rutger Hauer movie I saw, and it made me a lifetime fan. What an excellent bad guy! The set up of the movie is all in the beginning.

At the start of the movie:
Jim is delivering a car from Chicago to California and becomes overly tired and nearly has an accident falling asleep at the wheel. He subsequently picks up a hitchhiker, John Ryder, who at first is a very quiet passenger. When they pass a stopped vehicle along the rode, Ryder’s tone suddenly changes, pulls a knife and taunts Jim with it, indicating he is going to kill him. The taunting goes on for a few moments until Jim notices that Ryder isn’t wearing his seat belt and the passenger door is ajar. Jim pushes Ryder out of the car and drives away feeling triumphant and very much relieved.

In subsequent scenes, Jim is trying to outrun Ryder both on foot and in a vehicle but unsuccesfully. Ryder always turns up. It leaves the viewer to surmise that Ryder was impressed with Jim not letting himself become another of his intended victims – and that when Jim pushed Ryder from the car, he then decided that Jim would be the one to stop his killing spree. But Ryder had to give Jim motive to stop him; so he stalks & terrorizes him until Jim hates him enough to stop him. Another underlying reason he stalked and taunted him – in his own sick way, Ryder admired Jim.

Another excellent Rutger Hauer movie is “Ladyhawke” which also stars Michelle Pfieffer and Mathew Broderick. It is a romance, thriller, mystery. In this movie, Rutger Hauer plays a good guy.
