Depending of which statistics you read – less than a third of all people who lose weight are able to keep it off permanently or 4 out of 5 people who lose weight are not successful at keeping it off, leading to a yo-yo dieting regimen that recurs each year as they gain and lose weight.

I am reminded of the movie Dangerous Minds where Michelle Pfeiffer plays the part of a an ex-marine teacher who teaches in a tough inner city school. She starts off by giving all the students an ‘A’ and it’s their job to keep and maintain that ‘A.’ She says it’s much harder to keep an ‘A’ than get one. Anyone can get an ‘A.’

Anyone can also lose weight. There are many safe and unsafe ways to lose weight. The people who have the most trouble keeping the weight off are the ones who lose weight rapidly with the latest fad diet or diet pill. There is not much work involved in losing weight with one of these methods. The healthy eating and living habits have not been developed that lead to a healthy lifestyle.

Quick fixes do not last long. Just as quickly as you lose the weight you’ll usually gain it all back and then some. So how do you keep the weight off? How do you become one of the few who lose weight and keep it off?

The people who do this successfully and permanently are the ones who develop better habits and make minor modifications to their life’s choices. They change the meaning that food plays in their life. They add some activity to their couch potato lifestyle. Can you do this? Yes, but it will take some work and effort.

The only way to keep weight off is to start eating a proper balanced diet and start exercising to keep the weight off. And it doesn’t have to be the traditional exercise that many people have in minds when they think of exercise. You can take up pole dancing. I kid you not. They actually give classes on pole dancing and they are becoming pretty popular. Or for a little less risqué you can take up regular dancing.

Set yourself some short term realistic goals. Try to keep the weight off for a week. Then 2 weeks. Then a month. Then 3 months and then 6 months and then for good. You can do this with the right motivation. You need motivation from your friends and family. If you have friends who are always trying to get you to go out and eat make sure you suggest some healthier restaurants.

Combine the right activities and eating habits and you’ll control your weight indefinitely.

Another tip is to start dating if you’re single. That’ll keep you motivated to keep the weight off so you can attract a mate. And then once you start dating take walks. Play basketball, or tennis, or learn dancing. Not only will you have fun but you won’t put the weight back on.

Learning how to keep weight off is just as important as losing the weight in the first place. You don’t want to keep jumping from diet to diet. Simple changes can lead to impressive results over time. Take the first step. Lose the weight once and keep it off. Keep your ‘A’

(This review contains no spoilers)

It is not often that a movie steps up to the plate and hits a home run, especially when that film is based on a well written book. I am not sure that Stardust, the cinematic interpretation of Neil Gaiman’s book by the same name, quite does that, but it certainly comes close! Director and partial screen writer Matthew Vaughn makes a mark with his second film, as Stardust captures Gaiman’s sense of a playful, adult-appreciated fairytale. The film does not delve into anything overly risqué or gory, but the themes that run throughout the story, although acceptable for slightly younger audiences, are definitely slated to entertain viewers with more life experience. It is this refreshing element that makes Stardust a film to be sure to see on the big screen.

The special effects in the film are tastefully done and lavishly executed. The neither detract from the presentation, nor seem gratuitous, but rather propel the story and are almost unnoticeable despite their brilliance. They are just as special effects should be – part of the plot and in a sense, almost one of the actors with whom the audience must interact and gain that sense of suspension of disbelief.

Casting for Stardust is top-notch, allowing Vaughn to make the movie what he envisioned. Professional performers who embrace the roles completely fill each role, from experienced, seasoned actors like Michelle Pfeiffer, Peter OÂ’Toole, and Robert de Niro to somewhat new comers and smaller part performers, like the young, attractive Olivia Grant, who brings her expertise to the screen just as brilliantly as the actors we have seen for years.

Charlie Cox performs opposite Claire Danes and their mismatched level of experience does not show in the least. They work with and off each other stunningly to make the heart of the story unfold perfectly. Michelle Pfeiffer conjures a delightfully evil disposition and still remains compelling. De Niro takes on a new twist to his usual casting and pulls it off with convincing ease. And while he is never seen in the film, the familiar voice of Ian McKellen brings the entirety of the filmÂ’s story together for the audience, offering a welcome consistency to the quality of the presentation.

Stardust is a wonderful vision of a fine novel. One can only assume that Neil Gaiman is pleased with the final product and if this film is any indication, Matthew VaughnÂ’s next project, Thor based on the Marvel Comic series, will be just as exciting and tastefully presented!

Does anyone have video or the words to the speech Michelle Pfeiffer gives at the end of The Story of Us?

MORNING ON SUNSET BOULEVARD FINDS THE Homeless practicing the work ethic, producers plotting to ruin another good book and Michelle Pfeiffer puzzling over an onion slice in her yogurt and strawberries. Note to epicurean trendmeisters: She eats it, pronounces it not bad, then continues with the self-torture of talking about herself, her 22 films, her three Academy Award nominations and her new film opening on Friday.

Gone is the self-editing, the elliptical responses that made profiling her the journalistic equivalent of covering, say, geology as it happens. Even the Scandinavian gloom, a reserve of melancholy that the actress called on for such films as “The Russia House” and “Frankie and Johnny,” seems as distant as a winter night in the far north.

“I’m definitely lighter,” she says. “Having kids does that to you. They’re so pure, so hopeful. You look through their eyes and you realize how futile it is to sit around contemplating how miserable the world is.”

Off screen, Ms. Pfeiffer and her brood these days can fill a mini-van. She has a 1-year-old boy, an adopted 2-year-old daughter, a nanny and a husband, the producer and writer David E. Kelley, who is one of the leading forces behind the renaissance of solidly written television dramas, with “Picket Fences” and “Chicago Hope” to his credit.

On screen, Ms. Pfeiffer has made love to a man who moonlights as a wolf, fallen for a guy who thinks he’s a bat and mixed it up with the Devil. She has just finished a romantic film pairing with Robert Redford, and is promoting “Dangerous Minds,” the new film she hopes Senator Bob Dole, the Hollywood-bashing Presidential candidate, will like. The movie is based on the true story of a former marine, LouAnne Johnson, who takes on teaching chores in a high school where students are one slip away from prison, pregnancy or a life on welfare.

If squeezing into a tush-enhanced Catwoman suit for her role in “Batman Returns” was hard, consider the daunting challenge the 37-year-old Ms. Pfeiffer faces in “Dangerous Minds.” She will try to convince audiences that poetry can change lives at a school where the toilets barely work. “In my class,” Ms. Pfeiffer says at one point in the film, while defending her teaching tactics, “poetry is its own reward.”

There is no “mindless violence and loveless sex,” to use the phrase Senator Dole did in a speech earlier this year. The movie affirms an old-fashioned liberal principle — and a tradition of Hollywood movies in the same vein — that iconoclastic teachers can make a difference with the worst of society’s kids. In the film, Ms. Pfeiffer, who plays LouAnne Johnson, initially refers to the students of the Belmont, Calif., school district as “rejects from hell.” John N. Smith, a Canadian director whose film “The Boys of St. Vincent” made a stir last year, wanted a realistic mix of students, and added a host of nonprofessionals. The students dis LouAnne; she disses back. Education wins, as it does in “Stand and Deliver” and “To Sir With Love,” but not without a momentous struggle, and some low-level bribery.

“Some may say this is a ‘message film,’ and I know that sounds like the kiss of death,” Ms. Pfeiffer says. “It’s not. It’s funny. Sad. Entertaining. I read the book and wanted to play LouAnne. But I didn’t want to make a sentimental version of her story.”

LouAnne is bruised, like most of Ms. Pfeiffer’s memorable characters, and no slouch with Dylan Thomas verse. But inevitably the mind drifts to the Michelle Pfeiffer backlist, recalling the woman who undoes Jack Nicholson’s bedside handcuffs in “Wolf,” or the lounge singer who drapes herself over a piano in “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” cooing a heart-stopping rendition of “Making Whoopee.” The question is, will the potential for public service awards for “Dangerous Minds” and Ms. Pfeiffer’s current domestic bliss keep the actress out of smoky bars and unhealthy relationships?

Not to worry, she says. The lips that launched a thousand collagen injections are a long way from retirement. “I enjoy playing certain characters, usually the slightly trashy ones,” she says with reassurance. “I feel more at home with them.”

Daniel Day-Lewis is the actor any casual observer can tell has prepared for his role.  Unlike some of the stars who are his contemporaries, the viewer should have no expectations when going to watch one of his films, other than he will be intense and entirely committed.  With a few Oscars under his belt, Day-Lewis never had much to prove and does not take on too many roles.  Nonetheless, here are his five most mesmerizing performances now paying on satellite TV networks.

5. My Beautiful Launderette.  It was the beginning of Day-Lewis’ career, but his style was already down: chance-taking, taboo-breaking and all around immersed in his character.  When you line up a friendship between a Pakistani and an English punk, you could have trouble.  When you make the two men lovers, you have a really controversial picture.  Stephen Frears made his name here along with his star actor, a film which can be seen on the Independent Film Channel by satellite TV subscribers.

4. The Age of Innocence.  This role represents something of a departure for DDL, but that departure is trivial compared to that of the director, Martin Scorsese.  There are no guns, no mafia and certainly no Joe Pesci to be found.  However, there is plenty of violence — emotional violence, the cruelty of a social order which Edith Wharton’s novel described so well.  DDL plays Archer, a man torn between his true love (Michelle Pfeiffer) and the wife society says he should marry (Winona Ryder).  This film also plays regularly on IFC in high definition.

3. In the Name of the Father.  A stirring tale of IRA terrorism and fixed trials, this Jim Sheridan film was all the rage at the time of its release.  Day-Lewis once again undergoes a transformation, this time playing a hippie who moves to London from Belfast.  While Day Lewis received his customary Oscar nomination, he was joined by Pete Postelthwaite who plays his father in the film and Emma Thompson, who plays an attorney who tries to reopen the case.

2. Gangs of New York.  Another Martin Scorsese film, this picture was loosely based on the Herbert Asbury book which depicted the rise of gang life in New York in the late nineteenth century.  While expectations ran high and were impossible to meet, the film was saved by the breathtaking performance of Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher.  Hacking up meet and snarling in an accent that’s a work of genius, Day-Lewis reminded everyone what a heavyweight Method actor can do.  See this film in HD to appreciate the terrific art direction.

1. There Will Be Blood.  Just when his Gangs performance could not be topped, Day-Lewis proceeded to stun everyone as Daniel Plainview, an oil man in the Old American West.  Paul Thomas Anderson’s film has a roughness which is perfect for the material, but it’s DDL’s show all the way.  Any film organization that exists awarded him Best Actor of 2007.  This film still lights up satellite TV networks like HBO and Showtime.

While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain’t too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Mu…

The Fabulous Baker Boys

The Fabulous Baker Boys

$2.97

An inspired casting gimmick, a wonderful mood, a grown-up love story–all this in The Fabulous Baker Boys, but the only thing anybody ever talks about is Michelle Pfeiffer on top of a piano. Granted, it’s a showstopper: clad in a slinky dress, Pfeiffer rolls around on the Steinway while she purrs out a languid version of “Makin’ Whoopee.” Adding to the seductive vibe is the fact that she’s n…
