Sure Hollywood is the hub of everything entertainment and glamour, but you will also find some of the most tasty and elegant dining experiences in the Southern California urban sprawl known as the City of Angels.

Celebrities who make millions per picture are not worried about forking over lots of dough for the best eats, evident by their visits to some of the best and priciest spots to dine in the Southland. There are a handful of restaurants in Hollywood, Beverly Hills and surrounding areas that are known to draw famous faces on a daily basis. Most such restaurants pride themselves on protecting the privacy of the stars; some even seat them in special sections.

Perhaps the best spot to catch a glimpse of someone you’ve seen on the big screen is Spago’s Beverly Hills. The restaurant was originally known as Bistro Garden and was a favorite of former first lady Nancy Reagan. But in 1997, famed international chef and television personality Wolfgang Puck bought the spot and gave it a name synonymous with his restaurant in Hollywood. Puck’s Spago’s Beverly Hills is located at North. Canon Drive. Stars known to frequent the restaurant include Tom Hanks, President Bill Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Billy Crystal, Elton John, Lou Diamond Phillips, Sandra Bullock, Robin Williams and Sharon Stone.

The former president was actually at the restaurant just months after its grand opening in November 1997. His presence was part of a Rock the Vote effort and was attended by a long list of other celebrities, such as Kevin Spacey, Graham Nash and Michael Bolton. About a year later in 1998, Sir Elton John moved his star-studded post Oscar party to the restaurant, where celebrities in attendance paid $1,000 per plate for a charity dinner that benefitted AIDS research. Big names on hand that night were Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Jon Bon Jovi and Faye Dunaway. During normal business hours, the cost of dining at Spago’s Beverly Hills starts at about $70 for two.

The Ivy on Robertson Boulevard has long been one of Los Angeles’ top celebrity hangout spots. Not only has the restaurant drawn the biggest names for decades, but it also periodically serves as a Hollywood set; some of the biggest movie directors have shot scenes on the restaurant’s large patio. Just two examples are ‘The Bodyguard’ starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston and ‘Get Shorty,’ which featured Danny DeVito and John Travolta.

The Ivy is not exactly known for tasty eats, but more for the Hollywood glamour it attracts. The spot is a favorite hangout for stars and paparazzi looking to get photos of the latest blockbuster stars. In September 2003, stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez appeared at the Ivy not long after announcing the postponement of their wedding. Insiders believed the two went there to sideline gossip that they’d spilt up. Other stars seen there around the same time include Steve Martin, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, even Michael Jackson, and more celebrities.

Located somewhere between Shangri-La and La-La-Land, Sedona, Arizona is a truly beautiful place. It is surrounded by stunning red rock formations and miles of malarkey. This year, as in years past, about four million tourists are expected to visit the area. Many of them will be on the lookout not only for gorgeous scenery but for beautiful people as well.

These days Sedona is more famous than ever, its natural beauty and quirkiness the subject of endless articles and TV features. One would think that a place as beautiful and famous as Sedona would be teeming with celebrities, right? That visitors can expect to rub shoulders with the rich, famous and infamous at local coffee shops and bistros? Wrong. Very wrong.

Because of the presumed gullibility of the typical tourist, and some local tour guides’ quest for quick and easy sound bites (and bigger tips), a kind of local mythology has been created around a fantasy Sedona inhabited by A-list movie and TV stars, athletes and politicians. “That’s Madonna’s house over there,” says a lady Jeep tour driver with a straight face. “Sharon Stone lives on the next block. Al Pacino’s mansion is just down this street and to the left.”

The truth: A lady named Sharon Stone sells real estate in Sedona. So does a gentleman named Randy Moss (who never played tight end for the Raiders). At the moment, there are no celebrities living in Sedona. Actress Diane Lane keeps a second home in the city, population about 8,000. A certain Republican senator named John McCain sometimes stays at his ranch in Page Springs, about 10 miles from Sedona’s western outskirts.

And that’s it. Only a couple of celebrities lived here full-time in recent years — the beloved actor and song-and-dance man Donald O’Connor and actress Sean Young. O’Connor died in 2003 at the age of 78, and is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood. Ms. Young, who has appeared in many films including “Blade Runner” and “No Way Out,” her two most famous roles, moved back to Los Angeles a few years ago.

Ann Miller, the raven-haired, leggy dancer whose tap-dancing skills won her stardom during the golden age of movie musicals, kept a second home in Sedona. She was often seen at local restaurants, although her main residence was in Beverly Hills. She died there in 2004.

Actor Nicolas Cage loves Sedona and often came here with his (now) ex-wife, Lisa Marie Presley, a few years ago. He wanted to have a home here and was even in escrow for a place in an exclusive subdivision near the town’s tiny airport. He dropped out of escrow, so the story goes, because he wanted to own the airspace above his home and it wasn’t for sale.

But because there is usually a high BSQ (B.S. Quotient) in tourist towns, not only to lure the tourists but to make them think they might bump into somebody famous while sipping a $5 cup of coffee at Starbucks, the nonsense continues unabated. It’s true that many famous folks pass through Sedona because they, like us ordinary humans, love looking at jaw-dropping scenery.

At the beautiful Enchantment Resort, employees must sign an agreement that they will never reveal the names of famous people who stay at this posh retreat (its Mii Amo Spa costs around $1,000 a day). So…don’t ask, and I won’t tell!

Actress Jane Russell used to live in Sedona and ran a nightclub called Dude’s. Orson Welles rented a house here for his wife and daughter and often visited, once had to be rescued during a major flood in the Seventies. Lucille Ball never lived in Sedona, nor did Walt Disney despite persistent rumors. Bob Dylan has passed through, and Johnny Depp, and Mike Tyson, and Muhammad Ali, and Regis Philbin, and Martha Stewart, and…and…

And, yes, Oprah! In the summer of ‘06 she visited our local health food store during one of her cross-country tours, told a friend of mine, “There’s nowhere to eat in this town!” and bought a bunch of fresh organic vegetables.

And that’s the truth. If you really want to find truth in Sedona, take a hike. It has some of the best hiking trails on the planet. You might even meet me on a trail someday. I’ll be happy to give you an autograph.

In several major U.S. cities and Europe, Pilates (pul-Lah-tee), it seems, a new form of exercise, has gained great popularity among professional dancers, Broadway stars and movie celebrities. Even many current hard-core exercise enthusiasts are putting off their Nikes and steps in search of something new. Although still relatively new in the world of fitness, the method – the name of its founder Joseph Pilates – has existed for over 70 years.

History of Pilates
Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. It started life as a small and fragile child who fed his fascination with exercises that would make him healthier, stronger and more physically attractive. Obsessed with achieving the perfect body, he became an accomplished skier, boxer and gymnast. During World War Pilates was interned as a nurse and during this time that he designed exercise apparatus for rehabilitation of victims of the war wounded. In 1926, Pilates and his wife opened their first studio in New York City, where many of his first clients came from the world of dance. Later, the eminent dance master George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins and Martha Graham became devoted to his method.

What is Pilates?
Based on proper breathing, good posture and intense concentration, the exercises are performed on a mat or with specially designed equipment. Focusing on the breath and depth of support in the abdomen, the client developing a new form of foot and the most elegant way of moving. Roman Kryzanowska long time and now a student teacher trainer, describes “the movement flowing outward from a strong center.” By learning the correct posture and proper body alignment, the customer feels and looks taller and agile soon. The muscles are stretched and strengthened uniformly along, instead of the smooth muscle bulk. Of course this is contrary to the methods of today, most fitness professionals believe that the only way to “tone” muscle is to increase the diameter of the muscle. However, many students of Pilates swear by this method and have even admitted to feeling high, agile and “better” after only a few sessions. Many insist that even when the previous forms of exercise have failed, this program has been successful in helping clients achieve the body you’ve always wanted. “Pilates helps to restructure and reorganize the body that gives the impression of weight loss,” said Melissa Pope, Pilates instructor in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Team
There are 5 teams or equipment used for the method of Pilates, the reformer, the Pedipull, the Cadillac, Barrel and The President. Repetitions in the team are low, while the intensity and the concentration is high. The abdomen and the buttocks, while squeezing the legs and arms stretched to the maximum. Each piece of equipment is suitable for a wide variety of exercises for almost every body part.

Is it or not?
Celebrities like Madonna, Vanessa Williams and Sharon Stone rave about the benefits of Pilates. Does this mean it works or that the trend will last? Nobody can say for sure. However, the Pilates method seems to be more popular with women who are tired of hot, sweaty work that seem to bear little or exits any results. Lots of aerobic dance ex say that Pilates has done much to help change their appearance. “The Board of Directors of Pilates,” said Romana Kryzanowska, “features long, slender thighs and calves, a strong back, flat belly and a high tushie [rear].” And that’s not all. Many students of Pilates say feel rejuvenated and renewed after a session instead of drained and exhausted. “The Pilates method provides smooth, non-competitive long-term fitness,” says Michele Larsson, director of training at the Pilates Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Instruction
Pilates studios are opening up all the United States and Europe. There are currently about 500 studies in the United States. Pilates instructors officer must complete a rigorous training program including over 600 hours of training before getting certification. Classes are offered in either group or private sessions.

Pilates is going to take the world by storm? Maybe, maybe not. However, given the recent praise and the high level of customer satisfaction, no doubt, hear and see much more of Pilates in the coming months.

Who can benefit from Pilates?
People of all ages and physical conditions can benefit from the exercises prescribed. It is also a great system for injury prevention – especially for dancers and athletes who often suffer from injuries to his body, and depend for their livelihood. Physical therapists are also integrating some of the exercises in the treatment of patients.

In my further conversations with the steel industry executive, I prodded him about various other issues on steel. His company was at that point of time supplying a number of Indian car manufacturers. He divided the car manufacturing fraternity into two parts – the Quality Conscious (QC) and the Quality Unconscious (pun on a bun). While the QC guys had a gazillion tests before they offered a contract for any steel, the QU guys were easier to break into as long as the pricing was right.

The guy then told me about various problems normally associated with the quality of automotive steel. One of the problems was Sliver (yes Sharon Stone is a distraction for the male of the species), basically caused due to impurity. When any alumina impurity is pressed along with the steel during the rolling process, the impurity too gets stretched along the length of the steel and gets embedded as a very fine line normally invisible to a naked eye. Think of this as a fault line though as this may though result in a sudden shearing of the steel strip or panel along the line of impurity. Not something you would like to put in a car!

The second problem was that of orange peel, caused mainly due to improper rolling. Orange peel was caused due to uneven grains of steel which cause a roughness in the steel surface often causing paint to peel off after some time. In some cases, paint does not peel off but loses its luster.

Coming back to QC and QU, the executive pointed out that some of the cheapest cars in India used the best steel while some of the expensive ones often compromised on quality. So what did his company do when any lot of steel was rejected by the QC guys? Simple, supply it to the QU dudes who would promptly use it in their inside panels. As long as the price was right!
