As all of you are aware lately legal problems have abounded all over the NFL. While it is true that “High Profile” players are the only thing the media cares about, there are many more incidents that are not reported as widely. But, if you pick up a local newspaper in any area where there is interest in a NFL Team, you will find many more arrests. I am wondering if this issue has become worse in recent years, or has it always been taken care of, or swept under the rug in the past? If so, then why now?

Today the media has its focus on only two players …Mike Vick and Steve McNair. But, if you look further into the troubles the NFL is having, you will find that there are many more players with troubling legal problems. As of last season the Cincinnati Bengals had thirteen players arrested on numerous charges. Some of these charges were things such as, Weapons Violations, Spouse Abuse and Intoxication while boating. Then there is Tank Johnson, who was released from the Bears first then this past off season was let go by the Cowboys, only to wind up at, ahem, the Bengals.  So much for cleaning up the team.   He has already been found guilty on a Weapons Charge and has served four months in jail. Should fit in perfectly in Cincinnati.

I also found that boozing has become a huge problem in the league.   Players like Jeremy Stevens has been arrested twice for DUI and served time.  So many players are just like him.  In fact, 37 players in the NFL have had at least 2 DUI’s.  Stevens was also involved with a “Hit and Run” back in 2001.  Way to be that role model.  And of course Sean Taylor of the Washington Redskins, before he was murdered senselessly, was arrested routinely during his brief career.

Statistics compiled since 2000 have found that 408 citations or arrest have been made, and that is not counting any minor infractions. One statistic states that there have been 148 arrests in the past seven years.  That is about 1 in 144 NFL players arrested due to alcohol. It is also reported that defensive backs and wide receivers account for 230 incidents, those two being the most highly rated positions for arrests.

Over all these actions are very common when set against general population.  I think that the combination of money and age, is the largest factors that comes into play. Take any young man in their early twenties and you will find that they spend most of their nights in a bar while partying with friends. Now take those same young men, add millions of dollars on top of that, plus the ego that comes with being a professional football player, and you can see why the statistics are so high.  In the past these actions were kept more under raps by the executives who ran the teams. Why that has changed now? I am not sure, except that I do believe the media has further with the power of the internet, and more high tech devices at their disposal, sensationalized every indiscretion these players make. Plus, the players have high powered agents who believe that “No Press” coverage is worse thing possible. Don’t believe me? Look at the whole T.O. “Suicide” attempt a while back. Drew Rosenhaus had a field day with it. And now if Owens has a sore back we know about it! Football players no longer work for themselves, but are huge corporations. Long gone are the days when the NFL still had a sense of innocence. Instead to the detriment of all its fans, it has been replaced with agents, egos and rap sheets!
